The World’s Top 100 Largest Supermarket Chains
The 2016 list of Top 100 World’s Largest Retail Chains includes 29 supermarket chains and retail grocery stores, not including the hypermarkets, warehouse clubs, discount stores, drug stores, convenience stores, and Internet retail websites that also have grocery and food retailing as a significant category in their retail business.
In other words, global mega retail chains dominate retailing primarily because of food retailing.
Global food retail sales are more than $4 trillion annually, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
While the U.S. supermarket chain Kroger continues to hold the title of the world’s largest supermarket chain in terms of annual revenue, Germany and Australia also dominate the Top 100 list of global food retailers. The second and third largest supermarket chains are based in Germany and the fourth and fifth largest grocery retailers are based in Australia.
These World’s Largest Supermarket rankings are according to the 2016 Global Powers of Retailing report from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and STORES Magazine, which is published annually as a global benchmark comparison of the annual revenues of the largest retail chains of all types in the world.

The number in the left column represents the revenue ranking of the retail chain, compared to the revenue rankings of the 250 largest retail chains of all types included on the 2016 Global Powers of Retailing list.
