Online shoppers always like free shipping, particularly during the holiday season. Online stores that fail to offer free shipping end up with a lot of deserted shopping carts as shoppers scurry away in search of stores with free shipping or a coupon code. Shoppers tend to think that instead of paying for shipping, they should be saving that money to buy more gifts. It is money spent without any payback during the time of the year that most people are counting their pennies.

But holiday shoppers are not completely callous when it comes to paying for shipping. While most shoppers believe that major retailers should forgo shipping fees during the holiday season, they seem to understand that the small independent retailers may not be able to absorb the cost. And oddly, there seems to be more tolerance shown toward the upscale retailers with high price merchandise, which rarely budge on how much they charge for shipping and handling.

Fortunately, every year there are online stores that normally charge for shipping, but switch to offering free or very cheap shipping for a limited time during the holiday season. Holiday 2016 is following the same trend as online store begin posting holiday shipping policies. Here is what we have found, to date:

Best Buy

Best Buy has free shipping with no minimum purchase, from now until December 24, 2016, on most products.

Exceptions include special order delivery items, some scheduled delivery items, and items displaying “In Store Only” or “Check Stores” on the website.

Target

Target announced free returns and free standard shipping, with no minimum purchase, on all online orders from October 25, 2016, through January 1, 2017.

Like most retailers that advertise free shipping, Target may charge a fee on products that require special handling. If a handling fee is charged, it may be more cost effective to see if the item qualifies for Target’s “Order Pickup” service, which allows shoppers to order items from Target.com and pick them up at their local Target store for free.

PetSmart

Online shoppers at PetSmart get free standard shipping, now through November 27, 2016, at 6:30 a.m. ET. Shipping surcharges or special handling fees may apply to certain items due to the size or weight. Exceptions: Free shipping does not apply to select items from these pet categories: Live Pets, Canned, Fresh or Frozen Foods, and Cat Litter.

PetSmart online shoppers can save an extra 10 percent (up to $150) off their purchases by choosing the “Buy Online” and “Pickup In-Store” option through November 10, 2016, at 6:30 a.m. ET. But be prepared to see a long list of products that do not qualify for the additional savings.

CVS Pharmacy

Posted on page three on the leaked CVS Black Friday advertisement, CVS is advertising free shipping with no minimum order on November 24-26, 2016. Exclusions may apply.

Dick’s Sporting Goods

According to the Dick’s Sporting Goods website, online shoppers will receive free UPS shipping with no minimum purchase, except on overweight or oversized items.

The offer is valid for orders shipped within the continental U.S. and may not be available for packages going to APO or FPO addresses or P.O. boxes.
