The top grocery retailers in the U.S. and Canada include Walmart, Kroger, Costco, Target, and Loblaw, when “top” is measured by sales volume, according to Supermarket News. There are major discrepancies when comparing this annual Supermarket News ranking list and the Largest U.S. Supermarket and Grocery Chainslist published each year by the Deloitte and STORES Magazine.
The biggest difference is the inclusion of retailers like Walmart, Costco, and Target which retail groceries and foods but are classified as hypermarkets and department stores.
The World’s Largest Supermarkets list includes only retail chains with groceries and food as the primary product. The second major difference between the two lists is the inclusion of both American and Canadian retailers on “top” list, while the “world’s largest” list includes only U.S. grocery stores and supermarkets.
